DRAWING ATTENTION TO THE IMPACTS OF OCEAN SAND MINING IN LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA – PEACE CHIDINMA WILFRED-EKPRIKPO, NIGERIAN INSTITUTE FOR OCEANOGRAPHY AND MARINE RESEARCH, VICTORIA ISLAND, LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA

Much of the sand needed for housing projects is mined from water bodies around Lagos. Due to a high need for housing, the intensity of sand mining operations has rapidly increased without consideration of the ecological consequences. This outreach program will educate the local public, particularly fishermen and fish mongers, on the negative impacts of sand mining to fisheries and aquatic ecosystems as responsible and sustainable fisheries are crucial to achieving food and social security. The outreach program would be held on World Ocean’s Day in Lagos State, Nigeria where sand mining is very common.
