IMPROVING COMMUNITY AND K-12 UNDERSTANDING AND ENGAGEMENT IN EARTH SCIENCES IN THE CHESAPEAKE BAY WATERSHED THROUGH PLACE-BASED LEARNING MODULES – KATHERINE STRAUB, SUSQUEHANNA UNIVERSITY, PENNSYLVANIA

The Freshwater Research Institute (FRI) at Susquehanna University (SU) was founded to increase collaborative research and outreach on freshwater ecology in Pennsylvania. FRI staff collaborate with SU and regional higher ed faculty and students, state agencies, and nonprofits to assess and restore the ecological health of local watersheds. Through this project, FRI will offer a menu of learning modules to a broader geography and more diverse audience while expanding their “K to Gray” environmental education in the region. These modules will focus on themes central to FRI’s mission, like watersheds and biomonitoring as well as how to further community engagement.
