Mangroves have been identified as one of the most important sinks in the global carbon pool, accounting for about 14% of carbon sequestration by the global ocean. However, mangroves in the Niger Delta are being disturbed by anthropogenic activities like deforestation, degradation, and oil spills. This mangrove restoration program will collect data on the effects of crude oil spills in selected mangrove forests on the biodiversity and inhabitants of the region to suggest potential policy solutions to the problem. It will also work with local mangrove-dependent populations to provide alternative sources of livelihood to mitigate further mangrove degradation.
