THE SCIENCES OF PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE FOR INSTITUTIONAL STUDENTS – KINGSLEY IKE, NIGERIAN CONSERVATION FOUNDATION

Science education at the secondary level tends to be theoretical with little emphasis on the world outside the classroom. This program will take students into the field so they can see natural features and ecosystems first-hand. The students will be taken on a tour of three significant geographic features in south west Nigeria: Olumo Rock, Ikogosi Warm Spring, and the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove. Olumo Rock is a mountain historically used as a natural fortress. Ikogosi Warm Spring is surrounded by vegetation and has interesting thermal properties given the presence of both a warm and cold spring. The Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove was established more than four centuries ago and is a cultural landscape of undisturbed forest, the largest to survive to the present.
